       Christmas at the zoo

Every year at Christmas our house is like a zoo.

As all grownups know, kids can be animals too.

One moment all’s quiet, then monkeys everywhere

jump from floor to sofa or somersault to chair.

Meals are always pheasant, just lovely, as can be,

sugar plum fairy flights of feathered fancy free.

Warthogs make crumb mountains of cookies Christmas Eve,

and snort milk fountains and wipe noses on their sleeves.

When presents lay wrapped underneath a Christmas tree.

Cheetahs are the fastest things you ever did see

They check the tag, shake the box, and what’s more

They run so quick their spots slip off onto the floor.

A moment of blessed peace, like angels they play

the newest holiday game, then not far away

I hear the buffalo stomping of upset feet

and an elephants trumpets the breaking news

“it’s not fair” rhinoceros cheat.

Seals clap mitten flippers, build igloos in the snow,

‘til they freeze and shiver and plead for hot cocoa.

Flamingos decorate our house with feathers,

Although clothes are the more common name.

Playing toy pick-up is the favorite adult game.

Oh, yes. Christmas at our house is just like a zoo.

Admission is cheap so visit any time a clock says cuck-coo.

Actually we must admit, if we’re being honest with you,

That the animals roam wild the rest of the year too.
